In a ravine, in 340 BC, the late architect Polyclitus the Newer built, according to Pausanias, the theater of Epidaurus. Of all the ancient theaters the theater of Epidaurus is the most beautiful and best preserved.
Designed for entertaining patients, it has a capacity of 13,000 spectators. Is divided into two parts. One of the 21 rows of seats for the people and the bottom, of 34 rows of seats, for priests and lords.
His wonderful acoustics, as well as the very good condition he preserved, contributed to the creation of the Epidaurus Festival, an institution that has been launched for many years.
The Epidaurus Festival brings a lot of people to the town of Ligouri, at the foot of Arachnai Mountain. At the entrance of Lygourio, the Museum of Natural History Kotsimytos with the rare exhibits, highlights the mineral, palaeontological and natural richness of the Peloponnese.
The most impressive exhibit is an ammount of 235 million years old ammonite found in the ancient theater of Epidaurus.
